AI Can Build Your Website. That Does Not Mean Google and AI Can Understand It.

Building a professional-looking website used to require a designer, a developer, and sometimes several weeks of work. Today, I am seeing business owners describe what they want to an AI platform and end up with a surprisingly polished website within a few days, or even a few hours.

This new approach is often called vibe coding. Instead of writing every line of code manually, someone tells an AI tool what the website should look like and what it should do. The platform generates the design, layout, content, forms, and much of the underlying code.

The result can look impressive. The colors are right, the pages load, the buttons work, and the website may appear every bit as professional as one built through a traditional process.

But there is an important question that is easy to overlook:

Can Google, AI tools, and other search systems understand the website as clearly as a potential customer can?

What I have learned from reviewing these websites is that the answer cannot always be determined by looking at the finished design.

A Website Has More Than One Audience

Most business owners evaluate a website from the front end. They open it on a phone or computer, read the page, click through the navigation, and decide whether it looks professional.

That is important, but customers are not the website's only audience. A modern business website also has to communicate with Google and other search engines, AI-powered search and chat tools, automated crawlers, and directory and indexing systems. These systems do not necessarily experience a website the same way a person does.

To explain this a little deeper, aA visitor's browser runs scripts, retrieves additional information, and assembles the finished page within a second or two. Google can eventually do the same thing, but as a separate step, on its own schedule, after the page is first retrieved. The concern is not that every website using JavaScript is broken. JavaScript is a normal part of the modern web. The concern is whether anyone verified what different systems actually receive after the website was built.

The Part Most Articles Leave Out

During my own website reviews, I have found a specific issue that makes this more than a theoretical concern.

Google can render JavaScript and use the completed version of a page for indexing. That rendering happens as a separate step after Google initially retrieves the page, which means the necessary scripts and resources must still load correctly when Google processes it.

Independent technical testing and server-log studies have consistently found that major AI crawlers, including those associated with ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, generally retrieve the HTML initially delivered by a website rather than running the page's JavaScript the way a normal browser does.

That creates a meaningful visibility risk. If the company's services, locations, experience, and other important information only appear after JavaScript runs, an AI crawler may receive little more than an empty framework and instructions for assembling the rest of the page. A potential customer using the website may see everything. An outside system attempting to understand the business may see very little.

That distinction matters because AI-assisted search does more than return a list of links. It attempts to understand businesses and answer questions directly, and it can only work with the information it is able to retrieve.

Looking Finished Is Not the Same as Being Finished

AI website platforms are very good at producing the visible layer of a website: attractive headlines, service sections, images, contact forms, mobile layouts. The technical layer underneath the design often receives much less attention, and the gap between the two is usually invisible during a normal visit.

I recently reviewed a home services website that looked strong from a visitor’s perspective. The homepage clearly described the company’s services, service area, and experience. But when I examined what the website initially delivered before its scripts ran, I found little more than a title, a short description, and instructions telling the browser to load the rest of the content. A visitor would never notice the difference. A system that does not run those scripts could see almost nothing.

The Problem Is Not Vibe Coding

It would be easy to conclude that AI-built websites are bad. That is not the point. AI can reduce development time, lower costs, and help small businesses create websites they might not otherwise be able to afford. In the hands of someone who understands website structure, search visibility, and technical validation, these tools can be extremely useful.

The problem I keep seeing is the assumption that generating the website also validates it. A business owner asking an AI platform for a modern design, a services list, and a contact form is unlikely to also ask whether the site's content is available consistently, whether its links are crawlable, or whether its structure accurately identifies the business. Those aren't visual design decisions. They're visibility and interpretation decisions, and most owners were never in a position to know to ask about them.

The Technology Is Not the Villain

JavaScript often gets the blame when a modern website is difficult to index, but using JavaScript does not automatically hurt a website. A properly built JavaScript site can perform well. A poorly validated one can create unnecessary uncertainty.

The same is true of metadata. Some AI-generated websites include a proper page title and description, and that helps, but it does not replace the actual content underneath it. A title might tell search systems a company is a "Cape Coral Handyman and Home Repair Service." It does not tell them which services have their own pages, where exactly the company works, or what makes it trustworthy. Structured data has the same limit: it can describe a business, but that description has to be backed up by content visitors and crawlers can both actually see.

In both cases, the technology itself is not the problem. Whether it was implemented and validated is.

AI Search Raises the Stakes

Traditional search mostly matched a search phrase to a page and returned a list of links. A business with a weaker page could still show up lower on that list and get found anyway. AI-assisted search works differently: instead of returning a list, it's increasingly asked to interpret a business and recommend it directly — "who repairs drywall near me," "which HVAC company offers emergency service." A customer using it never sees a ranked list to scroll past. They see an answer, and a business the system couldn't read isn't in it.

To answer with confidence, an AI system has to understand what a business does and where it works, not just that it exists. If its crawler can't read the page in the first place, it can't factor the business into that answer at all. This doesn't mean the website disappears from the internet. It means the business becomes harder to understand, easier to misinterpret, and less likely to be recommended when a clearer competitor is available.

This Is Easy for a Business Owner to Miss

What makes this especially difficult for the business owners I speak with is that the website usually does not look broken. There's no error message, the design looks professional, the contact form works — the owner may even get compliments on the site. That creates a false sense of completion: the business assumes that because the site works for a visitor with the link, it works the same way for the systems responsible for discovering and interpreting it. Those are different questions.

A website can be attractive but hard to understand, indexed but weakly associated with its services, or visible by name but absent from category searches. Without a broader look, an owner has no real way to know which of those applies to their own site.

Building the Website Is Only the Beginning

AI has made it easier for almost anyone to create a website. That's a real opportunity for small businesses, but it also means more sites are being published by people who know how to generate a design without knowing how to validate what's underneath it.

Most business owners shouldn't be expected to understand JavaScript rendering, structured data, or crawl paths — that isn't their job. Their job is to run the business. That is why, when I review a website, I look beyond whether it appears professional. Someone has to verify that the business can actually be found, understood, and used by customers, search engines, and the AI systems increasingly standing between the two.
